Nigel Key, the Harold R. Roberts Distinguished Professor at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Scientists for dedication, achievements, and leadership in the field of medical science.

Leveraging over 40 years of distinction in his chosen field, Dr. Key has served as the Harold R. Roberts Distinguished Professor at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill since 2005. Specializing in the area of sickle cell disease research, he has found additional success as the founding director of the UNC Blood Research Center at the aforementioned university since 2019. In this capacity, he sees to the needs of patients as a clinician and hematologist, provides oversight for blood research efforts and administrative efforts, and is heavily involved in the recruitment, training and retention of all staffers. Prior to his current efforts, Dr. Key worked within the division of hematology and oncology at the University of Minnesota from 1990 until 2005. 

Long motivated by a fascination with the sciences, especially biology, Dr. Key initially studied pre-medicine at the University of St. Andrews, where he attained a Bachelor of Science in medical science in 1978. Following this accomplishment, he went on to earn a Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery at the University of Manchester in 1981. To remain aware of developments in the field, he has maintained his affiliation with such organizations as the American Society of Hematology, the World Federation of Hemophilia, of which he is a past board member, and the International Society on Thrombosis and Haemostasis, where he is a past president and secretary general. Looking toward the future, Dr. Key aspires to continue engaging in the important work of research and clinical studies, as well as saving lives.
