Dr. Tony J. Tavares, PhD, Principal Scientist at Teknova, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Scientists for dedication, achievements, and leadership in biochemistry.
With an impressive tenure spanning 22 years, Dr. Tavares has demonstrated excellence in his role as Principal Scientist at Teknova since 2021. His research journey started as a Pharmacoeconomics researcher at the University of Toronto’s affiliated Hospital, Sunnybrook Health Science Centre, from 2002 to 2003. Later, he served as a technical writer at BeneFACT Consulting Group Inc. from 2012 to 2015.
Dr. Tavares further honed his expertise as a research scientist in protein biochemistry at Therapure Biopharma from 2012 to 2015, ascending to the position of Lead Technical Scientist from 2015 to 2017. Subsequently, he made significant contributions at Catalent Pharma Solutions, holding roles as Lead Downstream Process (DSP) Development Scientist from 2017 to 2020 and Senior DSP Scientist from 2020 to 2021. In 2021, he established himself as a Senior Process Scientist at MilliporeSigma. In general, he has made many advances in the biopharmaceutical industry by making significant contributions to the development and enhancement of processes for purifying a range of biologics, including protein and gene therapy modalities, such as monoclonal antibodies, bispecific antibodies, recombinant proteins, mRNA, lipid nanoparticles (LNPs), DNA, and adeno-associated virus (AAV).
Prior to embarking on his professional path, Dr. Tavares pursued higher education at the University of Toronto, earning a bachelor’s degree in biochemistry and pharmacology with honors in 2002. His academic pursuits continued at York University, where he earned a PhD in biological chemistry in 2008. He later completed a postdoctoral fellowship at the University of Toronto’s affiliated Hospital, SickKids, in molecular medicine from 2009 to 2010. Dr. Tavares holds certifications in adult first aid/CPR/AED and bloodborne pathogens from the American Red Cross, design of experiments (DOE) from GE HealthCare, and spill response training from Therapure Biopharma Inc.
In addition to his primary role, Dr. Tavares maintains affiliations with various organizations relevant to his expertise. His scholarly contributions include five authored works published in Analytical Biochemistry, the Research Collaboratory for Structural Bioinformatics (RCSB) Protein Data Bank (PDB), and the RNA Journal. Over the course of his illustrious career, he has been honored with prestigious awards such as Honor Roll Awards, Ontario Scholar Award, and Sick Kids Fellowship Award, attesting to his remarkable achievements.
