Dr. Salerno’s academic journey began with a Bachelor of Arts in neuroscience from Oberlin College in 2005, followed by a PhD in neurobiology from the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine in 2011. His career trajectory involved significant roles at various educational institutions and laboratories. He began his journey at the Salerno Lab at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, contributing from 1997 to 2002. Subsequently, he served as a summer REU fellow at the University of Kentucky’s Department of Anatomy and Neurobiology in 2003 and later as a teaching assistant at the University of Pittsburgh in 2007. His experiences continued with roles as a summer research associate at Case Western Reserve University’s Physiology and Biophysics Department in 2004. They culminated in his position as a postdoctoral scholar at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine from 2011 to 2014.

Subsequently, Dr. Salerno served as a visiting assistant professor of biology at Earlham College from 2014 to 2016 and as an assistant professor at Lycoming College from 2016 to 2019. He then transitioned to a senior research principal position at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center from 2020 to 2022 before assuming the role of a molecular applications specialist at Luminex Corporation, a DiaSorin Company, from 2022 to 2023. Currently, he holds the position of field application scientist at Meso Scale Diagnostics, LLC, since 2023.

Dr. Salerno’s career has garnered accolades, including a senior research grant from the Indiana Academy of Science and the NIH Individual Postdoctoral Fellowship. His patent for innovative cell penetration agents and his role in establishing a neuroscience major at Lycoming College highlight his achievements. Influenced by his father’s scientific background and his college discovery of behavioral neuroscience, Dr. Salerno aims to advance in biotech, bridging business and research. He advises aspiring professionals to explore aligned opportunities in the field. Outside work, he actively contributes to LGBTQIA+ initiatives and cherishes time with his family, who live around the world.
