Harold G. Mitchell, ecologist at the United States Fish and Wildlife Service, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Scientists for dedication, achievements, and leadership in ecology.

With 14 years of experience to his credit, Mr. Mitchell has excelled as an ecologist at the United States Fish and Wildlife Service since 2009. He began his career as a district wildlife biologist with District 1 Florida State Parks Service from 1997 to 2009. Before embarking on his professional path, he pursued an education at Auburn University, where he earned a bachelor’s degree in wildlife science in 1993. He holds a PADI Open Water Diver Certification. He is skilled and experienced in management, customer service, project management, Microsoft Excel, environmental science, ecology, endangered species, and wildlife conservation.

Beyond his responsibilities within the field, Mr. Mitchell has participated in numerous endeavors outside of his professional circles. He volunteered with the Lost Pets Group, the National Audubon Society, and the Wilderness Society. In addition to his primary vocation, he remains affiliated with various organizations in relation to his areas of expertise. He was a member of the Raptor Rehabilitation and president of the Auburn Student Chapter of the Wildlife Society.

In light of his impressive undertakings, Mr. Mitchell has accrued several accolades throughout his career. He was presented with several performance awards and nominated for Conversation Scientist of the Year. He attributes his success to his perseverance. He refuses to give up on an animal once he begins tending to it medically. He became involved in protecting endangered species in the hopes of preventing their extinction and helping their populations grow to the point where they no longer need legal protection.

One of Mr. Mitchell’s most notable achievements was the development of a prescribed fire program. Unlike typical fire programs that aim to prevent wildfires, this program focused on using fire to benefit endangered species. He has spent time in his career prioritizing flatwood salamanders, which are significantly beneath their original population levels. In the immediate future, he aims to continue his professional endeavors, speak out on the reality and danger of global climate change, and engage in his hobbies which include fly fishing, wilderness camping, writing, and gaming.
