Heloise Bloxsom Lynn, PhD, consulting geophysicist at Lynn Incorporated, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Scientists for dedication, achievements, and leadership in geophysics.
With 49 years of experience to her credit, Dr. Lynn has excelled as a pioneer in the field of geophysics. Currently, she is the consulting geophysicist at Lynn Incorporated, a role she has held since 1984. In this position, she utilizes advanced techniques in reflection seismology to provide valuable insights into the characterization of oil and gas exploration and production. She began her career as a processing geophysicist at Texaco in 1976, just after completing her Bachelor of Arts in geology and mathematics at Bowdoin College. She then advanced her education at Stanford University, earning a Master of Science in exploration geophysics in 1978, followed by a PhD in geophysics with a focus on reflection seismology in 1979. She founded and managed Lynn Incorporated, a leading firm in the acquisition, processing, and interpretation of seismic data, serving a diverse clientele, from large oil companies to independent operators, from 1980 to 1984. Prior to this, she made significant contributions as a senior geophysicist at BP-Amoco.
Throughout her extensive career, Dr. Lynn has been deeply involved in both the academic and practical applications of geophysics. She co-edited significant works such as “Anisotropy in P-wave Seismic” in 1999 and “Seismic Anisotropy: Theory, Background, and Field Studies” in 2000, in addition to authoring numerous papers and journal articles. Her contributions to geophysics have been recognized with several prestigious awards, including the Reginald Fessenden Award from The Society of Exploration Geophysicists in 2015. This accolade was in honor of her transformative work in applying seismic anisotropy to practical challenges in geophysics.
Beyond her professional responsibilities, Dr. Lynn is active in her community, sharing her passion for music and sports by playing the piano at a local assisted living elder care village and teaching both youth and adults how to play pickleball. Her dedication extends to her roles within various professional organizations, including the Society of Exploration Geophysicists and the American Association of Petroleum Geologists. Attributing her success to the mentorship of excellent educators and the unwavering support of her family, she has set the ambitious goal to focus on applying her geophysical expertise to earthquake seismology, aiming to enhance our understanding of in-situ stress and its implications for earthquake prediction and safety.
