Title: Retired Human Factors Scientist
Company: System Development Corporation
Location: Bremerton, Washington, United States

Alfred Kenyon Butler, a human factors scientist who retired from System Development Corporation, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Scientists for dedication, achievements, and leadership in computer software.

Having carved out a distinguished position on the cutting edge of computer software, Mr. Butler served as a human factors scientist at System Development Corporation for over 30 years. He joined System Development Corporation in 1959 after several years as an active-duty field artillery officer with the U.S. Army. Mr. Butler remained engaged with the military in his role as a human factors scientist, training members of the United States Air Force on how to use newly integrated computer systems. Over the course of five years, he developed training materials that could be more widely dispersed, a project that he still considers a highlight of his career.

As a human factors scientist, Mr. Butler provided insight into how people interact with computers and how to create more user-friendly interfaces. A strong educational background backed up this expertise, as he had attended the University of California, Santa Barbara, where he earned both a bachelor’s degree and a master’s degree in psychology.

Although he retired in 1991, Mr. Butler has remained active, embracing a passion distinct from his work as a scientist. Upon his retirement, he founded the Spectapulars Dance Troupe, a tap dance group which he has led in over 500 performances across more than a decade. His skill in two very different fields highlights his adaptability, which he considers a major component of his success. Throughout his professional life and into his retirement, he has prided himself on working hard and approaching situations flexibly. Whether in science or in entertainment, Mr. Butler has provided an example of how to be a leader and bring joy to those around you.
