Dr. William A. Haseltine, owner and biomedical scientist at Haseltine Global Health, and founder, chief executive officer, and owner at ACCESS Health International, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Scientists for dedication, achievements, and leadership in medical research and education.

Dr. Haseltine has established himself in the fields of medical research and education, specializing in biomedical science and philanthropy. He is currently the owner and a biomedical scientist at Haseltine Global Health, a role he has held since 2008. Additionally, he serves as the founder, chief executive officer, and owner of ACCESS Health International. His prior roles include chief executive officer and owner of Human Genome Sciences from 1993 to 2005 and a professor at Harvard Medical School’s School of Public Health for Human Genome Sciences from 1976 to 1992. Additionally, he is the founding director of the American Foundation for AIDS Research and a board member of Young Concert Artists. Inc., the Metropolitan Opera, and the Smithsonian’s National Museum of American History, and an advisor for the National Institutes of Health. Before embarking on his career path, he earned a Bachelor of Arts in Physical Chemistry from the University of California Berkeley in 1966, followed by a PhD in biophysics from Harvard University.

During his career, Dr. Haseltine has made significant contributions to medical research and education. He taught at Harvard Medical School, developed the first HIV/AIDS treatment, and advanced cancer research. His team pioneered new drugs based on human genome information. Recognized by TIME magazine as one of the “25 Most Influential Global Business Executives,” he founded over a dozen biotechnology companies, with eight pharmaceutical products approved by regulatory agencies. He has published over 200 peer-reviewed manuscripts and 11 books, including recent works on COVID-19 and his autobiography. His publications include “My Lifelong Fight Against Disease: From Polio and AIDS to COVID-19,” “Science Is a Superpower,” and “A COVID Back to School Guide.”

Reflecting on his career, Dr. Haseltine and his family have faced many health challenges, which led him to pursue a career in science. He personally overcame pericarditis with the help of penicillin, one of the first civilians to do so in 1945. These experiences inspired him to focus on finding solutions to diseases through molecular biology and a modern understanding of life processes.

Dr. Haseltine takes great pride in his ability to recognize the threat of HIV, not only as a disease but also as a social issue, before most people did. He worked extensively in both areas, contributing to the development of effective treatments for HIV/AIDS and raising awareness about the seriousness of the problem. He also contributed to generating funds and research capabilities to tackle the issue. As a scientist and social activist, he has played a crucial role in establishing AmfAR, an organization that supports AIDS research. He has collaborated with high-profile figures such as Princess Diana, Elizabeth Taylor, and senate members to secure a substantial increase in the supplemental budget, raising it from one million to almost 400 million. Additionally, Dr. Haseltine convinced Princess Diana to hold a baby diagnosed with AIDS, which raised awareness about the disease and its impact.

Dr. Haseltine attributes his success to his curiosity about life and science and his mentors. He was fortunate to work under greats such as Drs. J.D. Watson, Walter Gilbert, David Baltimore, and Barouch Benacerref, all of whom received Nobel prizes. Looking to the future, he plans to move to Miami to be closer to his grandchildren and contribute to their lives. In offering advice to aspiring professionals, he says you should follow your interests and abilities, whatever they may be.
