Peter A. Adcock, PhD, senior lecturer at South Dakota School of Mines & Technology and principal metallurgist at PalaTeck Scientific LLC, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Scientists for dedication, achievements, and leadership in chemistry and academia.

With nearly four and a half decades of experience, Dr. Adcock has built a distinguished career in higher education and chemistry, specializing in hydrometallurgy and electrochemistry. Since 2018, he has served as principal scientist and metallurgist at PalaTeck Scientific LLC, where he provides consulting services in aqueous electrometallurgy and hydrometallurgy of base metals. He also serves as senior lecturer in chemistry at the South Dakota School of Mines and Technology, teaching physical and general chemistry. His experience also includes serving as visiting assistant professor at St. Edward’s University from 2016 to 2018, a sabbatical replacement in chemistry at Augustana University from 2014 to 2015, and visiting assistant professor at Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology between 2011 and 2014. From 2004 to 2011, he was a faculty member at Campbellsville University, following his work as a visiting research scientist at Northeastern University in 2004, a postdoctoral research scientist at Los Alamos National Laboratory from 2001 to 2004, a research associate at Australian National University from 2000 to 2001, and his A.J. Parker postdoctoral fellowship at Murdoch University in 1999. Additionally, he was a senior electrochemist at Pasminco Research Centre from 1990 to 1996, and research officer at the Electrolytic Zinc Company from 1981 to 1990. He also served as secretary for the RACI Electrochemistry Division between 1988 and 1992, and again from 1994 to 1997.

Dr. Adcock has made significant contributions to the industry, having co-authored “Analytical Testing Methods in Non-Ferrous Extractive Metallurgy” and being the first author of key papers, including “Transition Metal Oxides as Reconfigured Fuel Cell Anode Catalysts for Improved CO Tolerance” and “Measurement of Polarization Parameters Impacting Electrodeposit Morphology in Zinc Electrowinning Solutions.” He presented “Nucleation Overpotential and Its Role in Deposition Cycles” at IMPC 2016 and co-authored “Investigations of Spouted Bed Electrowinning for the Zinc Industry” at Hydrometallurgy 2003. His achievements include developing spouted bed zinc electrowinning with proton-blocking anion exchange membranes, creating techniques to predict metal deposit morphology, and documenting zinc electrowinning fundamentals. He also contributed to ANU/Origin Energy’s SliverCell™ technology and was the first to report the ruthenium alkylideneamido complex in 1981 and 1984.

Laying a solid educational foundation, Dr. Adcock earned a Bachelor of Science in chemistry from James Cook University in 1981, where he was also recognized as a university medalist. He later obtained a PhD in Chemistry from Western Sydney University in 1999 and earned the postscripts MRACI CChem in Australia. In light of his impressive undertakings, he received the SD Mines Outstanding Student Club Advisor Award for 2022-23. He is also a member of several professional organizations, including the Canadian Institute of Mining, Metallurgy and Petroleum, the American Chemical Society, the Electrochemical Society, and the Royal Australian Chemical Institute. Additionally, he has been serving as a catechist for the Roman Catholic Church since 2006. He attributes his success to the guidance of mentors throughout his career, as well as his openness to serendipity and divine inspiration. In the coming years, he plans to remain actively involved in teaching chemistry, mentoring younger researchers in electrochemistry and electrometallurgy, and continuing to provide consulting services in his field.
