Paul C. Sereno, Professor and Paleontologist at the University of Chicago, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Professional for dedication, achievements, and leadership in Higher Education.

Dr. Sereno is an established and award-winning paleontologist and tenured professor of paleontology, organismal biology and anatomy who has taught at the University of Chicago since 1987. Highly regarded in his field, Dr. Sereno has been dubbed “The Harrison Ford of Paleontology” for his contributions to the field. His research and scholarly interests encompass dinosaurs, the Sahara, ancient humans, and exploration.

Highly educated, Dr. Sereno received a Bachelor of Science in biology from Northern Illinois University in 1979, followed by a Master of Philosophy and Doctor of Philosophy in geological sciences from Columbia University in 1981 and 1987, respectively. Outside of his work and education, he has been engaged civically as a science affiliate at the Field Museum since 1990 and was recognized for founding Chicago Science Works in 2016 and NigerHeritage in 2016. Dr. Sereno previously co-founded and served as the president of Project Exploration from 1997 to 2012 and has remained an explorer-in-residence of the National Geographic Society since 2000.

Throughout his career, Dr. Sereno led numerous expeditions to Niger, Morocco, Tibet, China, and other countries between 1993 and 2021. Consequently, he has discovered many fossils, including intact skeletons, unearthed new species of dinosaurs and a 10,000-year-old human settlement in modern-day Niger, and was responsible for finding one of the most significant archaeological sites in the Sahara.

Dr. Sereno’s research has resulted in contributing to numerous professional journals, the creation of multimedia exhibitions, and 15 cable network documentaries, and he has been featured on podcasts, in the news, and on various television networks numerous times for his work, including National Geographic. In 2024, his fossil laboratory at the University of Chicago was relocated to a museum in Washington Park, a $60 million youth-centered science center, dinosaur lab and maker space named Scitopia Chicago, and a second one will be erected in West Africa.
