Mohammad Shadab, PhD, Staff Scientist at the University of Rochester Medical Center, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Scientists for dedication, achievements, and leadership in the Sciences.

Dr. Shadab is lauded for his success and expertise in biochemistry. Since 2019, he has been an esteemed staff scientist at the University of Rochester Medical Center (URMC), now known as UR Medicine, in Rochester, New York. Dr. Shadab has been instrumental in drug discovery and has extensively studied the mechanism of acute lung injury during sepsis or certain bacterial infections at the university’s skin cancer laboratory.

UR Medicine is a medical complex on the University of Rochester campus. It encompasses the university’s primary medical education, research and patient care facilities. It is also recognized as one of the most extensive medical facilities for medical treatment and research throughout Upstate New York.

Since entering his field, Dr. Shadab’s work has significantly contributed to understanding autophagy in endothelial cell inflammation and lung barrier permeability. Recognizing his work, he has contributed over 55 scholarly articles to various publications, including the Journal of Biological Chemistry, where he was honored with the Editor’s Pick.

In preparation for his career, Dr. Shadab studied in his native India after high school, earning a bachelor’s degree in chemistry, with honors, from Aligarh Muslim University, a master’s degree in biotechnology from Aligarh Muslim University and a Doctor of Philosophy in biochemistry from the Indian Institute of Chemical Biology. During his doctoral studies, Dr. Shadab’s research focused on the immunology of Leishmaniasis, a disease prevalent in tropical regions and parts of the U.S. and Europe.

After earning his doctoral degree, Dr. Shadab relocated to the U.S., where he conducted postdoctoral studies on skin cancer at a laboratory in Birmingham, Alabama. During that time, he collaborated with several chemical scientists to produce analogs and assess their activity on various skin cancer lines. This research was subsequently published as a featured paper.

Active in his professional community, Dr. Shadab is a member of the Shock Society and the North American Vascular Biology Organization. These affiliations reflect his dedication to advancing in the medical field and devotion to collaborating with other like-minded individuals.

The University of Rochester recognized Dr. Shadab’s success in 2019 with a Best Poster Award. One of his other works was also selected for a Course Collection Award in Spain. Moreover, the Journal of Biological Chemistry recognized Dr. Shadab as an editor-speaker.

Eager for future scientific study, Dr. Shadab plans to focus on sepsis-induced lung injury. He aims to make significant discoveries about lung injury through his studies and possibly find solutions to treat sepsis since no effective drug is currently available for septic patients. Passionate about finding a solution for sepsis, Dr. Shadab notes that, unlike other diseases, severe cases of sepsis can lead to fatalities in just a few days or a week if left untreated.

Reflecting on his budding career, Dr. Shadab was inspired to pursue his area of interest while in high school. Motivated to study biological sciences, he had planned to become a doctor or a researcher where he could leave an impact on society. As he prepares for future success, Dr. Shadab is eager to continue progressing in the ever-changing world of science.
