With more than two decades of experience to his credit, Dr. Maddox has established himself as an esteemed figure in the field of cell biology. Since 2019, he has excelled as an associate professor and William Burwell Harrison scholar at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. In these positions, Dr. Maddox teaches advanced cell biology and light microscopy classes while simultaneously developing a course on alternate career paths in the biological sciences. His expertise in cell division, cell biology, light microscopy, and cancer biology has distinguished him among his peers.

In addition to his primary roles, Dr. Maddox has been active as the president and founder of Mizar Imaging, a company he established in 2017. At Mizar Imaging, he leads efforts to design and manufacture innovative scientific equipment aimed at advancing scientific research. The company embodies his philosophy of scientists working with scientists to push the boundaries of discovery. Dr. Maddox’s entrepreneurial spirit is further exemplified by another company he founded two years ago, based on technology developed in his laboratory.

Dr. Maddox was previously active as an assistant professor at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill from 2013 to 2019. Prior to this position, he served as a principal investigator at the Institute for Research in Immunology and Cancer (IRIC) and as an assistant professor at the University of Montreal from 2007 to 2013. Dr. Maddox began his career with a postdoctoral fellowship at the Ludwig Institute for Cancer Research from 2003 to 2007, where he honed his skills in cancer biology.

To support his professional ambitions, Dr. Maddox pursued an education at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, from which he initially earned a Bachelor of Science in biology in 1995. He continued his studies at the aforementioned university with a Bachelor’s degree in biochemistry and molecular biology in 2003. He concluded his academic efforts at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill that same year, graduating with a Doctor of Philosophy in biology in 2003. Dr. Maddox’s educational background laid a strong foundation for his career, providing him with the knowledge and skills necessary to excel in his field.

Throughout his career, Dr. Maddox has been involved with organizations such as the American Society for Cell Biology and the Biophysical Society. His contributions to science are further highlighted by his role as a laboratory host for the National Science Foundation. Moreover, he has notably penned 32 articles published in scientific journals. Outside of his primary responsibilities, Dr. Maddox dedicates his spare time to his loving family, including his two wonderful children. 

Dr. Maddox attributes much of his success to the guidance of wonderful mentors and his determination to make a positive impact through science. His passion for discovery continues to drive him forward as he seeks new ways to contribute to the field of biology and improve research practices worldwide. In recognition of his stellar achievements, he received an award in 2002. Looking toward the future, Dr. Maddox remains committed to seeing his company flourish and aims to revolutionize how cell biologists utilize light microscopes. Likewise, he envisions building new microscopes and developing innovative solutions to enhance research methodologies.
