Mark P. Little, senior investigator at National Cancer Institute, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Scientists for dedication, achievements, and leadership in the sciences.

With nearly four decades of experience in the sciences, Dr. Little has established a distinguished career. He currently serves as an adjunct professor at Oxford Brookes University, a role he has held since 2022, and as a senior investigator at the Radiation Epidemiology Branch of the National Cancer Institute (NCI) since 2012. He has also been an honorary senior lecturer and assistant professor at the Medical Statistics Unit, London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, since 2009. He also served as an adjunct professor at the University of Manchester from 2018 to 2021, a contract worker at the NCI from 2010 to 2012, and held various academic roles at Imperial College, London from 2000 to 2010. Early in his career, he worked as a principal scientific officer at the U.K. National Radiological Protection Board from 1992 to 2000, a research officer at Berkeley Nuclear Laboratories from 1987 to 1991, and an operational research trainee at British Coal from 1985 to 1987. Laying a solid educational foundation, he earned a Bachelor of Arts in mathematics from Trinity College, Cambridge in 1979, followed by the Mathematical Tripos Part III in 1980, and a DPhil in Mathematics from New College, Oxford in 1985.

Dr. Little has contributed to numerous training courses, including “Elements of Statistical Learning,” “Survival Analysis,” and “Introductory Statistics Lectures,”, and has served on key committees such as the Radiation Epidemiology Branch Strategic Planning Committee since 2010. He has co-authored publications in impactful journals like Thyroid, Journal of Environmental Radioactivity, and the International Journal of Radiation Biology, and has written over 370 articles across various publications. He has served on editorial boards for journals such as Radiation and Environmental Biophysics and Scientific Reports, reviewed for numerous academic journals, and has given over 100 presentations at national and international conferences. He has also made significant contributions to the field of radiation epidemiology, serving as an expert adviser to the Radiation Effects Research Foundation in Hiroshima, Japan since 2007. In light of his impressive undertakings, he has been recognized with the National Cancer Institute Director’s Award of Merit in 2018, the Conference on Radiation and Health Outstanding Abstract Award in 2018, and the NIH Award of Merit in 2013, among others.

Dr. Little is actively involved the Radionuclide Cancer Risk Coefficient Review Panel for the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and the International Scientific Advisory Board for the MRC Centre for Environment and Health. He is a member of the UNSCEAR Expert Group on Epidemiological Studies of Radiation and Cancer and the National Council on Radiation Protection and Measurements. His recent contributions include a major review of cardiovascular disease published in the British Medical Journal in 2023 and research on the risks of cataracts and leukemia from low-dose radiation exposure. Reflecting on his career, he attributes his success to hard work, good fortune, and collaborations with exceptional colleagues. As he transitions toward retirement, he plans to continue his work at his current research pace, whether in the UK or the US.
