His endeavors at MIGRA Therapeutics have been complemented by his role as an assistant professor in the division of surgical oncology at Emory University’s School of Medicine, which he has held since 2019. Dr. Zhu’s expertise is additionally active with his involvement with the Discovery and Developmental Therapeutics Research Program at the Winship Cancer Institute of Emory University.
Dr. Zhu began his career with a postdoctoral fellowship at the National Institutes of Health from 2011 to 2013, where he honed his skills in molecular imaging and cancer diagnosis. He subsequently returned to China to serve as an associate professor at Xiamen University from 2013 to 2015, where he made significant contributions to research in his field. In 2015, Dr. Zhu joined Emory University as a postdoctoral fellow, dedicating himself to groundbreaking research that led to his promotion to associate scientist in 2018 and assistant professor in 2019.
In addition to his academic posts, Dr. Zhu has contributed significantly to scientific literature as a guest editor for several scientific journals, including Cells, Molecular Imaging, and Frontiers in Immunology. He has also been appointed to the editorial boards of the Journal of Functional Biomaterials and Frontiers in Chemistry. His commitment to advancing cancer treatment is evident through his participation in various National Institutes of Health study sections focused on radiation therapy, biology, nanoparticle therapeutics, biomaterials, delivery, and nanotechnology.
Dr. Zhu’s educational background laid a strong foundation for his professional achievements. He initially earned a Master of Science in molecular biology at Jilin University, one of the most prestigious and comprehensive public research universities in China. He subsequently graduated from the aforementioned university with a Doctor of Philosophy in cell biology in 2011. Dr. Zhu later concluded his formal studies with a postdoctoral fellowship at the Winship Cancer Institute of Emory University in 2018, which further solidified his expertise in cancer therapeutics and drug delivery.
Throughout his career, Dr. Zhu has been recognized with several accolades that underscore his dedication to pioneering treatments with potential clinical benefits, including the Small Business Innovation Research Award in 2019 and 2022 and the STTR Award for T-Cell Development in 2020. Outside of his primary endeavors, he enjoys dedicating his spare time to his family, which includes one child who is eight years old. He is passionate about swimming, going to the gym, watching movies, traveling, and playing chess. Looking toward the future, Dr. Zhu aims to progress his product to clinical trials while continuing his laboratory work on formulating drugs targeting various types of cancer.
