As the head of research and development at SES AI Corporation, Dr. Liu is responsible for managing a team of over 30 individuals focused on advancing battery technology to enhance cycling performance and temperature operations. He serves as the director of a new 15,000-square-foot research center, overseeing company targets and core technology milestones for new battery advancements. He has been with the company since 202019, joining as a senior scientist and rising to the director of electrolytes in 2020 before progressing to his current position in 2024. Focusing on joint development projects, he combines these roles within the organization to drive innovation and research in battery technology. Prior to his work at SES AI Corporation, He served as a staff scientist at Pacific Northwest National Laboratory for four years.
After earning a PhD from Huazhong University of Science and Technology in his home country of China, Dr. Liu immigrated to the United States in 2014 to pursue career opportunities. He has since distinguished himself as a scientist, developing an innovative battery that can be folded at any angle. After being folded 1,000 times, the battery continues to function without damage to its cells, supplying power to liquid crystal display (LCD) and light-emitting diode (LED) devices through a plug connector. This remarkable technology began as a major focus of his doctoral research, and following his studies, he was able to further his work in the U.S. He aspires to become the leading expert in battery technology, a rapidly growing and crucial field. As countries transition to green energy solutions to reduce air pollution, many European companies are determined to eliminate gasoline cars in favor of electric vehicles, a trend also seen in the United States and Asia. Through his work, he strives to create a sustainable future for SES AI Corporation and contribute to making the world a more beautiful place.
Moving forward, Dr. Liu hopes to grow SES AI Corporation now that the company has become public. He plans to further develop and commoditize their new batteries, testing them and working with other industry players to improve the designs. Focused on improving battery safety, he prioritizes the company’s mission to promote green energy and advance electrolyte technology, innovating and designing new molecules to enhance their products.
