Jyothirmayi Kopella, Senior Pharmacovigilance Scientist Lead at CSL, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Scientists for dedication, achievements, and leadership in Biopharmaceuticals.
Dr. Koppella is a former physician distinguished for her expertise in pharmacovigilance. She has been affiliated with CSL, a global biotechnology company specializing in orphan diseases, since 2019. Initially acquired as a clinical safety scientist, she became a senior clinical safety scientist and senior pharmacovigilance scientist in 2024, where she briefly served until being named a pharmacovigilance scientist lead. As such, Dr. Koppella manages a team of five scientists. She is also a part of the Global Safety and Pharmacovigilance team, which analyzes safety data for the company’s products, including plasma therapeutics, monoclonal antibodies and gene and cell therapies. Tasked with analyzing the data received by the safety team to ensure that protocols and regulations are upheld for patient safety before being released to the market, Dr. Koppella and her team also coordinate with investigators regarding the clinical aspects of some of CSL’s products to ensure patients safety during clinical trials.
Beginning her career over 15 years ago, Dr. Koppella was a resident physician specializing in family medicine at several tertiary hospitals in her home country of India between 2007 and 2011. However, she quickly realized she could do more than treat patients. With her parents’ support, she continued her education and pivoted into research. Initially acquired by Logic Planet, she worked as a drug safety scientist and product safety associate between 2011 and 2014. Dr. Koppella joined Ascent Life Sciences as a clinical safety associate I in 2015 before being promoted to drug safety associate III from 2016 to 2017. Additionally, she succeeded as a medical evaluator at Advanced Clinical between 2017 and 2018.
In preparation for her future, Dr. Koppella received a Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery in medicine from NTR University of Health Sciences in India in 2008 and a master’s degree in molecular pathology and toxicology from the University of Leicester in England in 2010. In addition to her formal education, she received professional credentials through the Drug Information Association in safety audits and inspections, pre-marketing clinical trial safety, the introduction to drug safety, and drug safety regulatory requirements. She also received a designation in CSL management essentials from the GP Strategies Corporation. Fascinated by science and research for as long as she can remember, Dr. Koppella attributes much of her success to her passion for the work and her strong work ethic, which stem from the lessons she learned from her mother, a highly accomplished gynecologist. Excited about the future of her career, Dr. Koppella aims to raise awareness about orphan diseases, which will result in more clinical trials that will provide insight into the development of treatment options.
