Title: Director of Laboratory Services
Company: Genetworx LLC
Location: Glen Allen, Virginia, United States

Matthew J. Beckman, PhD, director of laboratory services at Genetworx LLC, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Scientists for dedication, achievements, and leadership in laboratory services and higher education.

Dr. Beckman, director of laboratory services at Genetworx LLC, based in Glen Allen, Virginia, has been at the helm of his leading role since 2020, overseeing all business operations, making strategic decisions at the ground level and managing all compliance and financial flow. Initially employed as a senior scientist from 2013 to 2022, where he focused on personalized genomics, he simultaneously served as the molecular diagnostics laboratory manager between 2017 and 2022. In this capacity, Dr. Beckman worked in conjunction with Recovery Centers of America LLC (as RCA Reference Laboratory), where he managed the Genetworx molecular division that provided testing space for personalized health care in women’s health, infectious disease detection, wound care and full-spectrum pharmacogenetics testing.

Since pivoting into his new role as director, Dr. Beckman’s company began concentrating solely on fighting the COVID-19 pandemic, with tests detecting infection in its earliest stage. Despite the unusual circumstances, he found it highly gratifying to contribute to the greater good. Dr. Beckman’s team provided 12 million tests, helping individuals determine if they were sick and what steps to take next. This remarkable effort outshone all his previous work due to its scale, with his team testing between 30,000 and 45,000 samples daily at the pandemic’s peak.

Before being acquired by Genetworx LLC, Dr. Beckman was employed by Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond, Virginia, beginning as a professor and laboratory manager from 2000 to 2009 and then as an affiliate faculty in the department of pharmacology and toxicology at Virginia Commonwealth University between 2009 and 2022. During his tenure, he was engaged in oncology research, investigative studies of radiation and chemotherapy, and in vivo and in vitro testing of novel drug therapies and innovative drug combination strategies. Dr. Beckman also served as a faculty member in the department of pharmacotherapy and outcomes science in the school of pharmacy in 2011. Concurrently, he excelled as a senior scientist and a cross-validation specialist for NextGen sequencing at American International Biotechnology (AIBiotech), also in Richmond, from 2012 to 2013.

Highly educated in his respective field, Dr. Beckman holds a Bachelor of Arts in biology from Franciscan University of Steubenville since 1986, a Master of Science in nutritional physiology from Iowa State University, and a Doctor of Philosophy in nutritional physiology from Iowa State University in 1993. Beyond his education, he remains active in his field as a prominent member of the American Molecular Pathology Society and the American Association of Bioanalysts. He is also involved in his community with Rotary Club International, through various local charities, and his church.

In recognition of his professional success, Dr. Beckman received a Lifetime Achievement Award in Science and a Father of Dan Egan Award from the Franciscan University of Steubenville. He also received a Businessman of the Year Award from Rotary Club International for his contributions to the community. Dr. Beckman attributes his success to his upbringing in a farming community in Iowa, where he spent much of his childhood learning the importance of work ethic.

Dr. Beckman looks forward to future initiatives and is eager to establish one of the country’s leading infectious disease testing laboratories by focusing on conventional infectious disease testing and pharmacogenetic testing. Notably, his company was recently acquired by a new entity, Logistics and Distribution, which he believes will positively affect its future. Beyond his work-related goals, Dr. Beckman aims to form a foundation from his current investing club, Ivygrow, to support community engagement and initiatives.
