Dr. Spalart, now retired, spent over two decades employed by Boeing, one of the world’s most renowned aerospace companies that develops, manufactures and services commercial airplanes, defense products and space systems for customers across over 150 countries. Hired in 1997 as a senior technical fellow, he retired in 2020. Dr. Spalart’s career at Boeing was marked by extensive research in turbulence in the air. He also created mathematical theories and simulations and contributed numerous turbulence modeling and testing papers. Before joining Boeing, he was a scientist for NASA in 1979, which played a significant role in his subsequent industry success.

Noting that turbulence has been both his friend and enemy throughout his career, Dr. Spalart’s most significant achievement was the turbulence model he co-published with S. Allmaras. He also garnered many citations on Google Scholar due to his hard work and dedication as an expert in turbulence modeling. Dr. Spalart’s success can be attributed to his education, having earned a Master of Science from École Polytechnique in Paris in 1979 and a Doctor of Philosophy from Stanford University in 1982.

Beyond his rich educational background, Dr. Spalart has found significant rewards from his professional membership in the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics (AIAA) and the National Academy of Engineering. He also received a scholarship to support his research. In light of his success, Dr. Spalart has been recognized several times with accolades, such as the Reed Aeronautics Award and a Fluid Dynamics Award from the AIAA. He credits his many accomplishments to his French education. Despite being retired, Dr. Spalart intends to continue contributing to turbulence research due to his passion for the industry and many ideas.
