Dr. Desai has established himself as a distinguished expert in pharmaceutical product development for both human and animal health. Since 2022, he has served as the director of late-stage drug product development at Boehringer Ingelheim, where he is responsible for producing clinical trial supplies for animal studies.
At Boehringer Ingelheim, Dr. Desai leads a team of product development scientists, overseeing development in the lab and ensuring that products are effectively scaled up for larger manufacturing. Additionally, his role involves establishing strategies related to development, technology, design and experimental planning to achieve desired outcomes. Prior to stepping into his current position, Dr. Desai was the research and development director at GSK from 2020 to 2022. During that time, he played a pivotal role in leading product development and pipeline execution and contributed to the portfolio growth strategy of over-the-counter brands. From 2017 to 2020, he served as a principal scientist in product development within GSK’s global research and development division, where he honed his skills in product design and robustness studies.
Dr. Desai’s earlier career included time as a lead research and development scientist in pharmaceutics at Purdue Pharma LP from 2016 to 2017. Before that, he was a senior formulation scientist at Sun Pharmaceutical Industries Inc., where he worked from 2012 to 2016 after initially joining the company as a formulation scientist in 2009. Initially, he began his career as a validation specialist at CorePharma LLC in 2008 and as a formulation scientist at Apostle Remedies from 2006 to 2007.
Educationally, Dr. Desai holds a Doctor of Philosophy in pharmaceutics from the University of the Sciences in Pennsylvania, formerly the Philadelphia College of Pharmacy, where his research focused on enhancing the solubility of poorly soluble active ingredients. Earlier in his educational journey, he obtained a Master of Science in pharmaceutical engineering from the Stevens Institute of Technology along with certificates in pharmaceutical manufacturing practices and project engineering in pharmaceutical manufacturing. Originally from Gujarat, India, he attended Sardar Patel University in his home country, where he earned a Bachelor of Pharmacy.
Throughout his career, Dr. Desai has been instrumental in developing numerous products that have successfully reached commercialization. Notably, he played a key role in the approval process and launch for parasiticide combination product for dogs, and contributed to the development of several innovative Gastrointestinal and Respiratory branded products and generic formulations of pain and central nervous system disorders.
As an involved professional in his field, Dr. Desai is actively involved with industry-related organizations, such as the American Association of Pharmaceutical Scientists, where he presented poster presentations at their events. All in all, he is dedicated to making a meaningful impact through his work and leadership.
