Ernst H. Kastning, PhD

Title: Consulting Geologist
Location: Radford, Virginia, United States

Ernst H. Kastning, PhD, consulting geologist, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Scientists for dedication, achievements, and leadership in geology.

Though he’s devoted over 45 years to studying, teaching and consulting in the subject of geology, Dr. Kastning did not initially envision this path for his life. While studying in college, he began exploring caves as a way to relax. After graduating in 1966, Dr. Kastning spent five years as an engineer working on aircraft designs at Pratt & Whitney. However, during this time he continued his cave expeditions and eventually realized that he wanted to pursue a career that would allow him to spend more time outdoors.

In 1979, Dr. Kastning took on his first role as a professor at Murray State University. He later taught at the University of Connecticut for five years and Radford University for 20 years. As a teacher, Dr. Kastning was known for his multidisciplinary approach, bringing together knowledge in geology, engineering and an eclectic mix of other topics that reflect his broad range of interests. He focused on critical thinking and maintaining an open mind, encouraging students to embrace the same curiosity he demonstrated.

Dr. Kastning retired from teaching in 2006, becoming professor emeritus at Radford University. However, he has continued working as a geological consultant, freelancer writer and speleologist. He has been brought on for a variety of projects, such as investigating a sinkhole on private property and providing guidance on public infrastructure. Beginning in 2016, Dr. Kastning contributed to a project opposing the construction of a natural gas pipeline in Virginia. Utilizing his expertise, he produced a comprehensive report pointing out numerous environmental hazards the pipeline would encounter, including sensitive geological features and caves. Though still taking on occasional consulting work, Dr. Kastning has focused more on research and writing in recent years. He enjoys the freedom to explore a diverse variety of scholarly work.

Throughout his life, Dr. Kastning’s professional endeavors have been supported by his own academic background. Prior to discovering his love of geology, he pursued a bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in 1966. In 1975, Dr. Kastning obtained a master’s degree in geology from the University of Connecticut. Subsequently, he earned a PhD in geology from the University of Texas in 1983.

Since embracing his love of caving, Dr. Kastning has explored and studied in caves across 45 of the 50 states in the U.S., as well as in several other countries. He has established himself as a key figure in the caving community. Between 1967 and 2025, Dr. Kastning has attended 55 national caving conventions. In 2014, he published his first book, “Natural Bridge,” which discusses the history and modern reality of the Natural Bridge landmark located in Shenandoah Valley.

Outside of his career as a teacher and consultant, Dr. Kastning is a dedicated husband, father to three and grandfather to three. He has multiple ongoing research projects that he aims to publish in the near future. Additionally, Dr. Kastning has set the ambitious goal of exploring caves in the final five states that he has not yet checked off his list. He enjoys living in the mountains and intends to continue doing so while prioritizing his research and further intellectual stimulation.
