David E. Miller, Physics Professor Emeritus and Researcher at the Pennsylvania State University, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Scientists for dedication, achievements, and leadership in physics education and research.
Lauded in the field of physics both nationally and internationally, Dr. Miller had an innate interest in and an affinity for mathematics and its corresponding development for the leading concepts in
the many growing fields of the science at that time, which he utilized to propel his career forward within physics and education. Graduating from the University of Vermont with a Bachelor of Arts in mathematics and physics in 1965, Dr. Miller went on to attend the State University of New York at Stony Brook, now known as Stony Brook University, where he earned a Master of Arts in physics in 1967 and a Doctor of Philosophy in theoretical physics with thesis advisor Professor Max Dresden in 1971. Additionally, he received a Habilitation under Professor Helmut Satz in theoretical physics at the University of Bielefeld in Germany in 1978.
Dedicating 32 years to the Pennsylvania State University’s Department of Physics, Dr. Miller now holds the title of professor emeritus, having attained the rank in 2010. Post-retirement, he continued teaching at the Pennsylvania State University for five years. He originally came to Penn State in 1983 rising through the ranks from an assistant professor and associate professor to full professor of physics. While working for the institution, he also sat on the university senate from 1988 to 1996. Additionally, Dr. Miller taught as a privatdozent in theoretical physics and an associated university professor at the University of Bielefeld and as a scientific assistant at the Free University of Berlin in Germany.
Demonstrating versatility in his profession, Dr. Miller has contributed his expertise to several scholarly journals, in which he has published many articles and professional reports. Additionally, he was a professional evaluator and referee for such scientific journals such as the Physical Review and the European Physical Journal. Notably, he has also been invited to speak at myriad conferences and was a lecturer through the Fulbright program in Wroclaw, Poland and Zagreb, Croatia.
As a testament to his success, Dr. Miller earned the Outstanding Research Award from Penn State in 2005 and was honored with a Bausch and Lomb Award for Scientific Achievement in 1961 while he was still a high school student. From 1977 to 1978, he earned a Heinrich Hertz scholarship in theoretical physics, as well as a Fulbright Award from the University of Wroclaw in Poland in 1997 and from the Rudjer Boskovic Institute in Croatia in 2004. While attending the University of Vermont, Dr. Miller also received the Chemical Rubber Company Achievement Award in Physics in 1962 and 1963. He is the notable recipient of the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award.
