Gurmukh Singh, MD, PhD, Walter L. Shepeard chair of clinical pathology and vice chair of clinical affairs at Augusta University, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Scientists for dedication, achievements, and leadership in the field of health care academia.
With more than four decades of experience to his credit, Dr. Singh has accumulated a fulfilling career as a leader in the fields of health care and education. Since 2014, he has excelled as the Walter L. Shepeard chair of clinical pathology at the Augusta University Medical College of Georgia. Additionally, in 2016, he took on his appointment as the vice chairman of clinical affairs for the institution. Throughout his time in his leadership roles, Dr. Singh has largely specialized in experimental research, immunopathology, and both anatomic and clinical pathology.
Prior to his current appointments, Dr. Singh operated as a professor and medical director of clinical pathology at the University of Missouri-Kansas City School of Medicine from 2006 until 2014. During this time, he also served as a medical director at Heritage Labs International Inc. from 2011 to 2015. At the onset of his career, Dr. Singh held several key roles at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine and the VA Pittsburgh Healthcare System between 1978 and 2006, notably working as a professor of pathology and as the chief medical officer and the vice president of clinical affairs.
Before embarking on his professional journey, Dr. Singh cultivated his own higher education at the Armed Forces Medical College in Pune, India, earning an MD in 1971. After immigrating to the United States in 1973, he subsequently completed his residency in pathology at the Mount Sinai Beth Israel Icahn School of Medicine in New York in 1974. As part of his continued academic efforts, Dr. Singh later studied at the University of Pittsburg School of Medicine, where he achieved a PhD in experimental pathology in 1977 and fulfilled his residency in pathology in 1978. He concluded his scholarly endeavors at the University of Pittsburgh Joseph M. Katz Graduate School of Business, receiving a Master of Business Administration in 1998.
Dr. Singh is licensed to practice medicine in the states of Georgia, California, Pennsylvania, Kansas, Missouri and Michigan, and he is board certified in immunopathology and both clinical and anatomic pathology via the American Board of Pathology. Ever committed to his profession, he remains active as a member of several pertinent organizations, including the American Association for Clinical Chemistry, the American Association for the Advancement of Science, and the Academy of Clinical Laboratory Physicians and Scientists, among many others. Well-regarded for his creative output as well, Dr. Singh has published over 150 peer-reviewed articles and contributed to various book chapters and scholarly publications.
To commemorate his achievements, Dr. Singh has been honored with numerous accolades, including the Gold Award for Outstanding Contribution to Science from The Pittsburgh Federal Executive Board in 1992 and a Silver Star Award from the National Center for Health Promotion and Disease Prevention in 2005. In light of his fulfilling career, he has largely attributed his success to his innate skills and to the guidance of his father. Among his professional accomplishments, he is notably grateful to have mentored many undergraduate students and residents in his specialty. Furthermore, Dr. Singh takes pride in discovering and defining the biological importance of two novel genes in the lungs that identified a sub-type of multiple myeloma.
