Peter Shi-Tung Yuen, staff scientist at the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases with the National Institutes of Health, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Scientists for dedication, achievements, and leadership in scientific research.
With 34 years of experience to his credit, Dr. Yuen has excelled as a staff scientist at the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases with the National Institutes of Health since 2001. He began his career as an associate of the Howard Hughes Medical Institute at Vanderbilt University from 1989 to 1990. At the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center, he contributed as an associate from 1990 to 1993 and as an assistant instructor from 1993 to 1994. He garnered a stellar reputation as an assistant professor at the University of Tennessee Health Science Center from 1994 to 2001. He was active as a visiting scientist at the Koch Institute for Integrative Cancer Research at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology from 2000 to 2001.
Before embarking on his professional path, Dr. Yuen pursued an education at the University of California, Berkeley, where he earned a Bachelor of Arts in biochemistry in 1981. He concluded his studies at the University of Minnesota, graduating with a PhD in pharmacology in 1989. Beyond his responsibilities within the field, he has participated in numerous endeavors outside of his professional circles. He has held the role of chairman of the research committee of the National Kidney Foundation Inc. since 2007.
In addition to his primary vocation, Dr. Yuen remains affiliated with various organizations in relation to his areas of expertise. He was a member of the Travilah Elementary School Parent Teacher Association, the American Association for the Advancement of Science, the American Society of Nephrology, the American Heart Association, Inc., and the American Psychological Association. In light of his impressive undertakings, he has accrued several accolades throughout his career. He was presented with the Director’s Award by the National Eye Institute.
In the immediate future, Dr. Yuen intends to develop the data he has published on therapies and convert his published successes into something practical and useful for the clinic. Additionally, he is keen on mentoring the younger generation. He would like to move some of their discoveries closer to the clinic, continue mentoring trainees aspiring to become independent investigators and build his community.
