Louisa Braal Tabatabai, affiliate professor of biochemistry, veterinary microbiology and preventive medicine at Iowa State University of Science and Technology, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Scientists for dedication, achievements, and leadership in education.

With 38 years of experience to her credit, Ms. Braal Tabatabai has excelled as an affiliate professor of biochemistry at Iowa State University of Science and Technology since 2011. She began her involvement with Iowa State University as an affiliate professor of veterinary microbiology and preventive medicine from 1985 to 2021 and as a professor and collaborator of biochemistry since 1985. She immigrated to the United States in 1957 and began her career as a part-time undergraduate research assistant at the University of California, Berkeley from 1959 to 1962. 

Ms. Braal Tabatabai continued her career as a research associate and graduate assistant with the department of animal science and the department biochemistry and biophysics at Iowa State University from 1970 to 1976. She established herself at the National Animal Disease Center at the Agricultural Research Service of the United States Department of Agriculture as a national research council fellow from 1977 to 1979 and a research chemist from 1977 to 2011. She has been active on the Civil Service Commission of Story County, Iowa since 2018. 

Before embarking on her professional path, Ms. Braal Tabatabai pursued an education at the University of California, Berkeley where she earned a Bachelor of Arts in chemistry in 1962. She continued her academic efforts at Iowa State University, graduating with a Master of Science in food and technology in 1966 and a PhD in biochemistry, enzyme kinetics, and protein chemistry in 1976. 

Beyond her responsibilities within the field, Ms. Braal Tabatabai has participated in numerous endeavors outside of her professional circles. She held executive positions with the International Journal, the Industry Journal, the Story County Board of Health, and the Civil Service Commission. She contributed to multiple scientific projects and 76 publications. She co-authored “Structural, Functional, and Immunogenic Insights on Cu,Zn Superoxide Dismutase Pathogenic Virulence Factors from Neisseria meningitidis and Brucella abortus” and “Non-contiguous finished genome sequence of Ornithobacterium rhinotracheale strain H06-030791.”

In addition to her primary vocation, Ms. Braal Tabatabai remains affiliated with various organizations in relation to her areas of expertise. She was a member of the Conference of Research Workers in Animal Disease, the American Chemical Society, and the American Society for Microbiology. In light of her impressive undertakings, she has accrued several accolades throughout her career. She was presented with the Outstanding Alumni Achievement Award in Biochemistry by Iowa State University. She received numerous research grants including for the development of a device that could detect anthrax which was awarded nearly $3 million dollars.
