She established herself as a researcher at the University of Groningen in the Netherlands from 2004 to 2006 before transitioning to the role of assistant professor at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill from 2011 to 2014. She served as co-founder and president of TeraStructure from 2012 to 2015. At the University of Texas at Dallas, she was active as a STEM educator from 2014 to 2016.

Dr. Ballan continued her career as a senior consultant of machine learning and NLP at Clarity Insights, now Accenture, from 2016 to 2018. She worked as an executive fellow at General Motors from 2018 to 2021. From 2022 to 2023, she contributed as chief technology officer and co-founder of MYAVA, Inc. Concurrently, she has been active as a venture partner at Green Light Equity Partners since 2022. She has garnered a stellar reputation as a professor at Bennington College.

Before embarking on her professional path, Dr. Ballan pursued an education at Yildiz Technical University where she earned a Bachelor of Electrical Engineering. She continued her academic efforts in Turkey and obtained a master’s degree in computer science. She concluded her studies at Florida Atlantic University, graduating with a PhD in complex systems and brain sciences in 2010.

Beyond her responsibilities within the field, Dr. Ballan has participated in numerous endeavors outside of her professional circles. She contributed to Women in Data Science Worldwide, Great Minds in STEM, the Rare Genomics Institute, and many other impact startups in emerging markets. She contributed to professional works published by Studia Psychologica, the Journal of Student Research, Scientifica, the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, and more. In the immediate future, she intends to bring virtual reality technology to rural America and assist individuals who have lost their jobs due to the closures of big tech companies.
