Patrick Brant, PhD, independent consultant, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Scientists for dedication, achievements, and leadership in thermoplastic research and development.

Backed by more than 45 years of experience as a scientist and researcher, Dr. Brant has contributed to various organizations as an independent consultant and entrepreneur since 2019. In particular, he collaborates with the University of Houston and the University of British Columbia. Prior to pursuing consulting, Dr. Brant served as the chief polymer science adviser for Exxon Mobil Chemicals & Specialties. While he held this position from 2011 to 2018, his tenure with Exxon Mobil began in 1981 and includes a variety of roles. Dr. Brant helped guide the Exxon Mobil Chemical subsidiary to an estimated value of $40 billion before he left the company. He started his career as a research fellow at the U.S. Naval Research Laboratory in 1979.

Throughout the majority of his career, Dr. Brant’s research has focused on polyolefins, which can be developed into lubricants, adhesives and plastic used for many consumer goods, such as diapers, health care products, and car interiors and exteriors. He has played a significant part in the creation and commercialization of new types of polyethylene and new methods for producing polypropylene, allowing for better storage for fresh produce and more flexible stretch film for large pallets. During his extensive time with Exxon Mobil, Dr. Brant fostered a reputation for solving expensive problems, such as getting rid of the odor of plastics produced by the company. He has been granted 175 patents in the U.S., a testament to the impact and cutting-edge nature of his work. Dr. Brant’s research has also been published in more than 65 peer-reviewed publications. He is also renowned for his contributions toward the advancement of lithium-ion batteries.

Dr. Brant’s success is built on a strong academic foundation. He obtained a bachelor’s degree in chemistry from George Mason University in 1972. Dr. Brant subsequently earned a PhD in chemistry from The University of Arizona in 1977. He pursued postdoctoral studies at Purdue University, researching inorganic and organometallic chemistry.

As a commitment to his field, Dr. Brant has been affiliated with a number of pertinent organizations. He maintains membership in the Society of Plastics Engineers, the American Physical Society and the American Chemical Society. He has also offered his guidance as a technical adviser for A20 Advanced Materials Inc., a small startup originating from the University of British Columbia. 

Dr. Brant’s achievements have been honored with numerous accolades from Exxon Mobile. He was most recently nominated for an award recognizing his ability to face critical challenges, such as product launches and running manufacturing plants. Dr. Brant attributes his success to his creativity, versatility and eagerness to continue learning new skills and solving new problems. He also expresses gratitude to the talented team members he has worked alongside throughout his career.

A one-time competitive athlete, Dr. Brant enjoys spending his free time running, backpacking and enjoying long-distance hikes. A dedicated family man, he also loves spending time with his wife, four children and nine grandchildren. Looking ahead, Dr. Brant is excited to continue expanding his latest research project with the University of Houston. Additionally, he is considering opportunities to launch his own company or work together with others to utilize his most recent polyolefin patent. Dr. Brant intends to continue leveraging his expertise to push forward research as a consultant, demonstrating his dedication to both academic and commercial advancements in the field.
