Jeanne A. Jordan, PhD, professor and scientist at The George Washington University, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Scientists for dedication, achievements, and leadership in scientific research.

With nearly three and a half decades of experience, Dr. Jordan has built a distinguished career in molecular biology and virology. Since 2008, she has served as professor and director of the DC Center for AIDS Research and NGS Lab at The George Washington University. In this role, she teaches public health microbiology and wet lab classes focused on infectious disease diagnostics, while also providing guest lectures on virology and epidemiology. Additionally, she oversees a laboratory supporting large-scale grants, including the District of Columbia Center for AIDS Research, and manages a clinical trial unit studying anti-viral drugs for FDA clearance. She also participates in global research efforts as one of 32 labs worldwide, offering next-generation sequencing services for DC CFAR investigators and contributing to immunology quality assurance programs at Duke University. She also served as professor and clinical laboratory director at Magee-Women’s Hospital at the University of Pittsburgh from 1990 to 2008, and as associate director of research there from 1999 to 2006.

Additionally, Dr. Jordan has been an active member of the Pan American Society for Clinical Virology and the American Society for Microbiology and has served on the Science Advisory Board for the DC Public Health Laboratory and Forensic Sciences. She has also contributed as a speaker, including an upcoming plenary talk on point-of-care testing for infectious diseases at an international meeting in 2024. Her accomplishments include a patent for PCR identification of medically important Candida species, the Laboratory Management Excellence Award as a top performer from the HIV Prevention Trials Network, and the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Pan American Society for Clinical Virology. She laid an educational foundation for these accomplishments, earning Bachelor of Science in Medical Technology from the University of Wisconsin-Madison in 1977 and a PhD in Molecular Virology from the University of Pittsburgh’s School of Medicine in 1988. She is also a Board-Certified High Complexity Laboratory Director through The American Board of Bioanalysis.

Reflecting on her path, after completing her undergraduate degree, Dr. Jordan began her career as a clinical microbiologist before shifting to a research lab, where a CDC training program ignited her passion for virology. This led her to pursue a career in scientific research, gaining access to critical grants, including those from the NIH. She was recruited as the first laboratory scientist at George Washington University’s School of Public Health, where she made a significant impact in the field of public health. Her most notable achievement was her team’s pivotal role in sequencing COVID-19 at GWU, including being the first to identify the Omicron variant in Washington DC. Prior to GWU, she led a research lab at the University of Pittsburgh, developing the first molecular diagnostic test for infectious diseases in the women and infants population. Dr. Jordan attributes her success to resilience, hard work, and compassion for her team, and she plans to transition into consulting to continue making an impact.
