Amber J. Liggett, MSEM, communications specialist at Groundswell, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Scientists for dedication, achievements, and leadership in meteorology.
With nearly a decade of experience, Ms. Liggett has established a successful career in meteorology, public service, and science communication. She currently serves as a communications analyst at Groundswell, a role she has held since 2022. In this capacity, she helps brand the office through collaboration with leadership, departments, and legislators, writes stories and announcements about funding opportunities, and builds climate literacy. Her experience also includes serving as an instructor at the University of Pittsburgh in 2023, public information officer for the Pennsylvania Department of Health from 2020 to 2022, and North American Humanitarian Response Initiative research project manager at Millersville University in 2019. She also served as a graduate assistant at Millersville University from 2018 to 2020, broadcast meteorologist at ABC27 WHTM Television from 2018 to 2021, and protégé in the Significant Opportunities in Atmospheric Research and Science program at the University Corporation for Atmospheric Research from 2016 to 2018. She was also a Hollings Scholar with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration from 2016 to 2018, intern at WGAL-TV in 2018, and participant in the National Weather Center REU at the Center for Analysis and Prediction of Storms in 2015.
Laying a strong educational foundation, Ms. Liggett earned a Bachelor of Science in meteorology from Millersville University in 2018 and a Master of Science in emergency management from the same institution in 2020. She has actively contributed to professional organizations as a student counselor with the National Weather Association from 2018 to 2020 and a member of the affairs committee for the American Meteorological Society from 2017 to 2020. She is also involved in IAEM and served as a weather blogger for the Global Weather and Climate Center from 2017 to 2018. Beyond her professional roles, she has been a balloon artist with Amber’s Amazing Animal Balloons since 2015, using her craft to connect STEM and art through weather-themed balloon sculptures. Looking to the future, she aims to deepen her work in natural hazard risk perception. She is also eager to expand her balloon business, emphasizing its connection to STEM, and continue offering private consulting services in entrepreneurship, climate information, and emergency preparedness. Advising aspiring professionals, she highlights the importance of learning from experienced colleagues, observing global trends, and staying adaptable to ensure effective communication and relevance in their field.
