Richard Edward Fernandez, consultant, owner and president of Rf Consulting, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Scientists for dedication, achievements, and leadership in consulting.

Dr. Fernandez retired from a long and distinguished career in chemistry and higher education after over two decades and now serves as the owner of Rf Consulting in South Carolina. Specializing in fluorocarbon chemistry, fluoride chemistry and related reagents within the fluorine chemistry industry, he assists businesses in identifying, developing and commercializing niche products. Additionally, Dr. Fernandez provides his expertise to help clients fill market gaps with suitable products. His expertise in fluorine chemistry, big molecule polymers, small molecules in refrigeration, and fire extinguishing applications have been pivotal to his success.

Beginning his career as a development chemist in the fluorochemicals research and development division at DuPont Chemicals in 1987, Dr. Fernandez subsequently became a research and development chemist for the division from 1989 to 1991 and continually progressed into research supervisor, senior chemist in various capacities, and technology associate until 2001. His widespread expertise has also earned him the opportunity to supervise the construction of chemical plants in India, China, Europe and the United States. Dr. Fernandez also garnered success in academia as an adjunct associate professor of chemistry and associate research scientist at the University of Alabama from 2000 to 2012 and as an adjunct associate professor of chemistry at Clemson University between 2011 and 2015. As a seasoned scientist, he has secured several U.S. patents and one in Russian and has authored and co-authored numerous scholarly journals disseminating his research findings.

A graduate of Loyola University, Dr. Fernandez received a Bachelor of Science in chemistry in 1984. He continued his studies and received a PhD in fluorine chemistry from the University of Southern California in 1987. He also received several professional credentials through the Center for Professional Advancement, including in patent law, international licensing and negotiation, and completed a toxicology for chemists course through the American Chemical Society. Beyond his formal education, Dr. Fernandez honorably served his country in the U.S. Marine Corps, where he advanced to the rank of corporal, and remains active with the Marine Corps Heritage Foundation, the American Battlefield Protection Program and the Marine Corps Association. Professionally, he is a member of the American Chemistry Society, where he served on the decision committee.
