Ms. Jann has established herself as a distinguished engineer and computer scientist at the Thomas J. Watson Research Center at IBM in Yorktown Heights, New York, since 1989. Her career with the organization has been marked by her significant contributions to computer science, particularly in systems software for power servers and supercomputers. Ms. Jann’s expertise extends to operating systems, systems management for clusters with availability, performance, linear algebra library for social graph analysis, and post-quantum cryptography optimizations for power systems. Her work on projects such as Deep Blue, ASCI supercomputers, Blue Gene, Summit and Sierra has earned her widespread recognition. Ms. Jann is most proud of her role as a distinguished engineer at IBM, where she finds problem-solving and discovery immensely rewarding.

Among her various roles throughout her career, Ms. Jann served as a technical staff member at the Mathematical Analysis and Computation Center and as an advanced system engineer at the New York Banking Branch Office in Manhattan. Her early career included positions as an APL programmer and systems programmer at IBM and a technical staff member at Network Analysis Corporation in Glen Cove, New York. Additionally, Ms. Jann had the opportunity to teach as an adjunct mathematics lecturer at Lehman College, City University of New York, in the Bronx.

Beyond her work endeavors, Ms. Jann’s commitment to making the world a better place is reflected in her co-founding role as an executive sponsor of an IBM internal group that encourages researchers from East and Southeast Asia, especially women, to achieve greater success in science-related careers.

Ms. Jann’s dedication to learning and discovering new things has been evident in her numerous achievements, including co-inventing the home node migration for distributed shared memory systems in 1999 and leading a team to invent dynamic logical partitioning of physical memory and processors for POWER systems. She holds over 40 U.S. patents and has been cited in over 1,250 scholarly publications as an expert in her field. Moreover, Ms. Jann has contributed numerous articles to professional journals. Among her most notable publications were “The Jann Model,” “Towards an Immortal Operating System in Virtual Environments,” and “Lazy Home Migration for Distributed Shared Memory Systems.”

Highly educated, Ms. Jann graduated from Wellesley College in 1970 with a Bachelor of Arts in Mathematics and a minor in physics, with honors, through cross-registration with the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. She then received a Master of Arts in mathematics from City University of New York in 1972 and a Master of Science in computer science from Columbia University in 1977. Ms. Jann’s academic background laid a strong foundation for her illustrious career. Beyond her formal education, she received a Micro-MBA certification from IBM.

Ms. Jann’s contributions to the field have been recognized with numerous awards, including four IBM Corporate Outstanding Technical Achievement Awards, an Outstanding Innovation Award, and 10 Research Division Awards, among other accolades. She attributes her success to her passion for mathematics and computer systems, hard work and the influence of several inspiring figures. As she continues her work on quantum safety algorithms at IBM Research, Ms. Jann remains committed to inventing and improving technologies that enhance security against potential threats.
