Currently serving as the chief science officer at NOW Diagnostics, he has been instrumental in overseeing research, analyzing data and directing staff to conduct various experiments. His role involves collaborating with the chief executive officer to provide scientific direction on potential products, development timelines and associated risks. Dr. Berry’s networking efforts with key opinion leaders and scientists from academic institutions and government labs have further enhanced the company’s research credibility.

Before his work at NOW Diagnostics in Springdale, Arkansas, Dr. Berry held several influential roles in the biotechnology industry. As the chief scientific officer at Aspira Women’s Health from 2023 to 2024, he utilized artificial intelligence and machine learning algorithms to identify patterns in human protein expression indicative of diseases like ovarian cancer and endometriosis. At OraSure Technologies, where he served as the vice president of research and development between 2018 and 2021 before being promoted to chief scientific officer until 2023, Dr. Berry was pivotal in developing the InteliSwab® COVID-19 rapid test. This innovative device received FDA approval and was widely used in U.S. schools due to its simplicity.

Dr. Berry’s earlier career included significant contributions at Grifols Diagnostics from 2015 to 2018, where he designed new assays for HIV and HPV and established mammalian cell culture as a modern alternative to yeast protein expression. His earlier tenure at Cangene Corporation between 2008 and 2011 involved establishing a research department focused on cloning therapeutic antibodies for biothreats such as Ebola and Marburg viruses. Additionally, Dr. Berry’s work at the National Microbiology Laboratory-PHAC from 2005 to 2008 led to developing the first neutralizing monoclonal antibodies for SARS-CoV.

Throughout his career, Dr. Berry has been recognized for his expertise in starting new molecular immunology laboratories and revitalizing research and development groups. His achievements have earned him numerous patents, including those related to COVID-19 immune response assay methods and recombinant proteins for various pathogens.

Dr. Berry’s academic journey began with a Bachelor of Science in honors microbiology from the University of Manitoba in 1992, followed by a Doctor of Philosophy in medical microbiology on campus in 1999. His postdoctoral fellowship at The Scripps Research Institute further honed his skills in the field. Influenced by several mentors, Dr. Berry attributes his success to perseverance and the support of family and friends.

Dr. Berry is an active member of several professional organizations, including the Canadian Society of Microbiologists, the International Society for Vaccines and the American Society of Microbiology. He has also significantly contributed by teaching and mentoring graduate students across multiple universities. Dr. Berry’s involvement with civic-minded organizations includes coaching minor league hockey and working with the University of Arkansas’ National Science Foundation for Mentoring iCorps program.
