Fralmer R. Nierva, Laboratory Director at Integrated Cellular and Molecular Diagnostics, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Scientists for dedication, achievements, and leadership in Laboratory Services.
Mr. Nierva is distinguished for her expertise with a career spanning four decades in anatomic pathology, laboratory medicine and biochemistry. Since 2016, he has served as the director of laboratory services at Integrated Cellular & Molecular Diagnostics, where he oversees both surgical and anatomic pathology as well as molecular laboratory operations. In this capacity, Mr. Nierva assists the medical director with policy development and supports the trade office by facilitating advanced and basic testing, with the majority of samples processed through his facilities. He leads a team comprising over a dozen professionals in the surgical and anatomic pathology laboratory, as well as several additional staff members in the molecular laboratory, which also includes research functions. Mr. Nierva’s leadership has been instrumental in expanding the laboratory’s capabilities, particularly in cellular and molecular diagnostics.
In addition to his primary role, Mr. Nierva has contributed as a senior technical consultant for Pitts Management Associates Inc. since 2015, providing expert guidance on hospital and medical care operations. Moreover, he has been engaged with the Cytology and Histology Services of Maryland, providing his expertise since 2009.
Among several other professional roles, Mr. Nierva briefly served as a laboratory supervisor and technical consultant at Pathology Laboratory, GI Associates of Maryland, in 2015. From 2010 to 2014, he excelled as a system manager for anatomic pathology services at Inova Health System, Northern Virginia’s largest health care provider. There, Mr. Nierva played a pivotal role in building integrated pathology laboratories that enhanced operational efficiency across the system.
Between 2006 and 2009, Mr. Nierva contributed his expertise to Kaiser Permanente in surgical and anatomic pathology services, constructing regional laboratories that continue to serve as benchmarks for quality and efficiency. His earlier roles included serving as a technical and administrative consultant for Doctors Pathology Services from 2005 to 2006 and managing laboratory technical operations at Diagnostic Pathology Services between 2004 and 2006. Mr. Nierva began his career in 1994, where he was involved in surgical and anatomic pathology services at Washington Hospital Center, spending 10 years refining his skills in laboratory management and compliance.
Mr. Nierva’s professional journey began with eight years in the U.S. Navy, where he worked as a histotechnologist and a pathologist assistant at Bethesda Naval Hospital, now Walter Reed National Military Medical Center. During this time, he was entrusted with processing tissue specimens for high-profile patients, including President Ronald Reagan and first lady Nancy Reagan.
Mr. Nierva holds a Bachelor of Science in public health, preventative medicine and immunology since 1974 and a master’s degree in biochemistry since 1979 from the University of the Philippines. He further completed coursework in histopathology and pathology at the Armed Forces Institute of Pathology during his military service. Mr. Nierva holds a designation as a diplomate in laboratory management.
Recognized for his active involvement in professional organizations, Mr. Nierva is a member of the National Society for Histotechnology and is an associate surveyor and inspector for the College of American Pathologists. Beyond his professional commitments, he is civically engaged as a volunteer at special community events. He has shared his expertise widely as a speaker on topics related to building laboratories, a subject on which he is considered an authority.
Throughout his career, Mr. Nierva has consistently demonstrated exceptional expertise in building laboratories from the ground up or restructuring existing facilities to achieve greater efficiency and effectiveness. He has been directly involved in the development or revamping of approximately 15 laboratories nationwide for organizations such as Kaiser Permanente, MedStar Health and Inova Health System. Mr. Nierva’s reputation for excellence has made him a sought-after consultant for laboratory construction and compliance.
Looking ahead, Mr. Nierva is dedicated to passing on his knowledge by mentoring future leaders within his current organization as they work toward building new laboratories, including projects for large urology groups. He is also considering opportunities to develop facilities in other states, such as Colorado, Kentucky or Arkansas.
