Title: Founder and Research Scientist
Company: Plasma Systems
Location: Torrance, California, United States
George Paskalov, PhD, research scientist and founder of Plasma Systems, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Scientists for dedication, achievements, and leadership in plasma technology research and development.
Born in a Bulgarian community in southern Moldova, Dr. Paskalov pursued higher education in Russia before immigrating to the United States in 1992, beginning a career of more than 30 years at the forefront of plasma technology research. Upon initially moving to the United States, he worked as a research scientist at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA). Across a tenure of 10 years with UCLA, Dr. Paskalov performed research alongside Professor Alfred Wong, a well-known physicist who specializes in plasma physics. While Dr. Paskalov demonstrated a mastery of theory during his academic journey, he felt drawn toward more practical applications for his research. He was eager to not just discover things that were scientifically interesting, but which could be implemented into processes that would deliver real-world results as well.
With that in mind, Dr. Paskalov founded Plasma Plus Inc., which he later rebranded as Plasma Microsystem and then its current name, Plasma Systems. At this company, he has spent 30-plus years researching breakthroughs in plasma technology and partnering with other companies to utilize these innovations. Dr. Paskalov’s research has touched multiple industries, including agriculture and waste-to-energy advancements. He has especially focused on environmental applications for plasma, such as reducing carbon and gas emissions, treating medical waste and addressing broader environmental concerns with hazardous waste.
In relation to his endeavors with Plasma Systems, Dr. Paskalov has become a co-owner of multiple other companies: Omstar Environmental Products, which sells engine lubricants; Torrent Energy, a manufacturer of renewable energy semiconductors; and Global Enviro, a Singapore-based organization centered on turning waste into materials for defense and aerospace products. Most recently, he has started work on a new project in Switzerland, where he has also become affiliated with the International Plasma Research Institute. Dr. Paskalov’s professional journey has taken him to countries across the world, including Japan, Russia, Singapore, Switzerland and the United States, supported by his multilingual background. He speaks Bulgarian, English, French and Russian.
Before venturing onto his vocational path, Dr. Paskalov completed an in-depth education. He obtained a master’s degree in electrical engineering from the Peter the Great St. Petersburg Polytechnic University, formerly the Leningrad Polytechnic Institute, in 1981. Subsequently, he earned a PhD in plasma physics from the same institute in 1989.
Dr. Paskalov’s career has been filled with many noteworthy accomplishments. Most notably, he has been granted 20 patents in the United States, including technology and processes for water disinfection, ore processing and seed treatment for agriculture. Dr. Paskalov has regularly given presentations at the International Plasma Chemistry Symposium across the past 40 years. He is particularly proud of his time at UCLA, both for the opportunity to work with the school’s esteemed physics department and because of his progress from a weak understanding of English to speaking it fluently.
In addition to his professional achievements, Dr. Paskalov is a loving husband to his wife Svetlana, a father to his daughter Julia, and a grandfather to his grandson, Zachary. He notes that Zachary, now 16 years old, often visits his laboratory and has even conducted several experiments with him. In the future, Dr. Paskalov looks forward to new hydrogen projects in the agricultural industry. These projects will take at least five years to be seen to completion, so he has no immediate plans to retire.
