Michael J. Teeling, MSc, PG, CPG, senior director of consulting geosciences at Montrose Environmental Group, Inc., has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Scientists for dedication, achievements, and leadership in geology.
Mr. Teeling showed a strong interest in math and science from a young age, developing a technical and analytical knowledge base that would become important to his future. In college, he was one of his few colleagues who pursued computer science and programming classes at the same time as geology, balancing both areas of interest. However, as Mr. Teeling approached his graduation, he chose to focus on geology, which would become his career for 40-plus years. He accepted his first job as a senior geologist with Scipar, Inc., in 1986.
After establishing himself in the field, Mr. Teeling joined Groundwater Technology as a staff senior geologist in 1991. This Netherlands-based company focuses on soil and groundwater remediation and would be his home for 10 years. Mr. Teeling would dedicate nearly 15 years to his role as a principal geologist at Stantec. Following that, he contributed as a senior consulting geologist at Woodard & Curran from 2015 to 2019.
Starting in 2018, Mr. Teeling leveraged his expertise in geology to create his own company, MJT Consulting Geologist PLLC. Through this venture, he has been able to work with a number of clients on projects requiring insight into geological issues, especially those related to regulatory and legal concerns. Mr. Teeling has positioned himself as a specialist within the oil and gas sector in particular, focusing on bedrock geology and the transport of fluids and gases. He has demonstrated proficiency in mechanical well integrity, gas migration and spill response, utilizing his background in geochemistry, geophysics and remote sensing.
Building on his efforts with MJT Consulting Geologist PLLC, Mr. Teeling was hired as the senior director of consulting geosciences at Montrose Environmental Group, Inc., in 2022. With more than 3,400 employees in over 100 offices located across Australia, Canada, Europe and the United States, Montrose Environmental Group provides a wide range of advisory services from experts in different areas. As a senior director, Mr. Teeling oversees teams handling tasks related to geographic information systems (GIS), air emissions, sustainability initiatives, methane intelligence auditing, and other geology and chemistry-related projects. He also regularly serves as an expert witness in legal cases, showcasing a commitment to integrity, honesty and following the data that has guided his professional journey from the start.
Before venturing onto his vocational path, Mr. Teeling set a foundation in his academic career. He obtained a Bachelor of Arts in geology from the University at Buffalo in 1984. Subsequently, Mr. Teeling earned a Master of Science in planetary geology from Kansas State University in 1986. He is certified as a professional geologist through the New York State Education Department’s Office of the Professions.
In addition to his career, Mr. Teeling is a loving husband to his wife, Mary, father to his two daughters, Kirsten and Lauren, and grandfather to two grandchildren. Outside of work, he enjoys raising Rhodesian Ridgeback dogs, collecting guitars and playing guitar music, including rock, classical, jazz and ambient. Looking ahead, Mr. Teeling is focused on succession planning within Montrose Environmental Group. Though he has no immediate plans to retire, he wants to make sure that younger staff members are prepared to take on his responsibilities when he decides to step back.
