His earlier tenure at the Educational Testing Service (ETS) in Princeton, New Jersey, was marked by progressive leadership roles, beginning as a senior research scientist in 2003, then as a principal research scientist in 2007, and as a managing principal research scientist from 2011 to 2014. During this period, Dr. Roberts worked closely with major organizations, including the Intelligence Advanced Research Projects Activity, the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development, the Army Research Institute, the Australian Research Council, and the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation.

Earlier in his career, Dr. Roberts taught as a lecturer at his alma mater, the University of Sydney, in Sydney, Australia, from 1994 to 1998. He then spent another five years as a senior lecturer on campus until 2003. Throughout these academic appointments, Dr. Roberts laid the foundation for his expertise in psychological and educational assessment.

Dr. Roberts’s academic background includes a Bachelor of Arts in psychology and English from the University of Sydney in 1985 and a Doctor of Philosophy in psychology in 1995. He recently enhanced his credentials with a CITI Program certification in human subjects’ research through social-behavioral-educational foundations in 2024.

He serves on the board of the International Society for Emotional Intelligence. He is also an active member of organizations such as the National Council on Measurement in Education, the Society for Personality and Social Psychology Inc., the Society for Industrial and Organizational Psychology Inc., the International Society for Intelligence Research, and the Experimental Psychology Society, among others.

Dr. Roberts is widely recognized as an expert in psychological and educational assessment. He has been instrumental in developing both cognitive assessments, such as ASVABTM, and noncognitive skill measures, including SELF+eTM and ACT TesseraTM. His prolific scholarship includes co-authoring more than a dozen books, such as “Building Better Students: Preparation for the Workforce,” “Emotional Intelligence: Science and Myth” and “Science of Emotional Intelligence: Knowns and Unknowns,” and publishing over 200 articles across disciplines, including education, psychology, business, medicine and engineering.

Garnering numerous accolades for his hard work, Dr. Roberts notably received two ETS Presidential Awards, two PROSE Book Awards, and an Honorable Mention for “Emotional Intelligence: Science and Myth.” He attributes his success to recognizing the importance of collaboration over individual achievement. He also credits his colleagues, family and friends as key motivators throughout his career. Eager for future opportunities, Dr. Roberts aims to develop assessments that not only measure cognitive abilities but also foster soft skills essential for citizenship and psychological well-being.
