Company: Merck & Co. Inc.
Location: Cambridge, Massachusetts, United States

Yash Deshpande, senior scientist of machine learning at Merck & Co. Inc., has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Scientists for dedication, achievements, and leadership in data science.

With over a decade of experience, Mr. Deshpande has built a successful career in data science, specializing in machine learning and AI. Since 2023, he has excelled as a senior scientist of machine learning at Merck & Co. Inc., where he focuses on patient stratification, developing algorithms for hospitals and IBD patients, researching knowledge graphs, and working with massive multimodal data sets. His previous roles include machine learning engineer at Prometheus Biosciences from 2022 to 2023 and Fresenius Medical Care North America from 2020 to 2022. He also served as a tutor for data analytics and visualization at 2U in 2021, held internships in data science at NBCUniversal Media and Revelio Labs in 2020 and 2019 respectively, and worked as a graduate research assistant at the Courant Institute of Mathematical Sciences and as a research technician at NYU Langone Health in 2019. Earlier in his career, he was a business technology analyst at ZS from 2016 to 2018. Additionally, his work on natural language processing was presented at Multimodal Representation Learning in 2021. He is also an active volunteer with A Better Cambridge and CRY.

Laying a solid educational foundation, Mr. Deshpande earned a Bachelor of Science in electronics and communications engineering from Savitribai Phule Pune University in 2016 and a Master of Science in data science from the NYU Center for Data Science in 2020. Additionally, he obtained a specialization certificate in data science from Coursera and Johns Hopkins University in 2018, verified his international academic qualifications through World Education Services in 2019, and completed courses such as “Intro to Python for Data Science” and “Introduction to R” on DataCamp. Reflecting on his path, he takes great pride in being part of the Prometheus Biosciences team and contributing to its success, particularly through his work on companion diagnostics and patient stratification algorithms. He attributes his success to his curiosity, willingness to explore beyond his comfort zone, and the unwavering support of his friends, family, and partner.

In the coming years, Mr. Deshpande hopes to build a team of domain and machine learning experts to tackle AI challenges, with a focus on understanding the human body, particularly healthcare patients and marginalized groups who lack access to current treatments. He envisions leading a team of data scientists and making a significant impact on discovering new drug targets and advancing precision medicine to identify patients who would benefit from those drugs across various disease areas. When advising aspiring professionals, he emphasizes the importance of being open to opportunities, even those outside your area of expertise. He recalls that as a young professional, many people around him had rigid ideas about their careers, while he rarely said no to an opportunity, even without specific domain expertise.
