Dr. Melton has established herself as a leading expert in forensic genetics, having built a distinguished 25-year career marked by significant contributions to science and public service, culminating in her retirement in 2025. Her most recent role as a project director and principal scientist at RTI International in Research Triangle Park, North Carolina, showcased her leadership in advancing forensic research and policy. At RTI International, Dr. Melton directed complex projects that bridged scientific innovation with practical applications, influencing national standards and best practices in forensic science.

From 2010 to 2013, Dr. Melton taught as an associate professor and served as a forensic scientist-in-residence at Western Carolina University in Cullowhee, North Carolina. In this capacity, she mentored students, developed curriculum and fostered academic-industry partnerships.

Before pivoting into teaching, Dr. Melton spent 2006 to 2010 as a senior forensic analyst with the Baltimore County Police Department in Baltimore, Maryland. There, she applied her expertise in forensic genetics to support criminal investigations, enhance laboratory protocols and provide expert testimony. Dr. Melton’s analytical skills and dedication contributed to resolving numerous cases, including sexual assaults, homicide and other violent crimes, reinforcing the critical role of science in the justice system.

Dr. Melton began her professional journey at the Department of Defense’s Armed Forces DNA Identification Laboratory in 2002. This position remains her most significant achievement, as it enabled her to work on human identification for military personnel, a cause deeply personal to her due to her family’s military history. She worked closely with families seeking closure for loved ones lost in conflicts such as World War II, providing compassionate support and scientific expertise. The impact of reuniting families with their fallen relatives continues to resonate with Dr. Melton and stands as a testament to her commitment to service.

Dr. Melton’s academic foundation included earning a Bachelor of Science in biology from the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor in 1992 and a Doctor of Philosophy in molecular biology and genetics from Wayne State University in Detroit, Michigan, in 2000. These rigorous programs equipped her with advanced knowledge and research skills that have been instrumental throughout her career.

Beyond her work-related activities, Dr. Melton’s civic engagement is reflected through her volunteerism with the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, as well as her philanthropic support for organizations such as the Make-A-Wish Foundation of America and the Rape, Abuse & Incest National Network. During her tenure in the field, Dr. Melton also frequently volunteered at college career days, delivered presentations and conducted workshops at elementary schools to inspire young learners’ interest in science.

Throughout her career, Dr. Melton has demonstrated unwavering commitment to scientific excellence, mentorship and public service, all qualities that have earned her recognition among her peers. She credits her success to the many individuals she has encountered throughout her life who served as informal mentors. Looking ahead, Dr. Melton intends to remain active in legislative and policy initiatives related to sexual violence prevention and response. She is dedicated to educating communities about recognizing abuse, supporting victims, and developing practical resources and protections.
