Dr. Chen’s illustrious career spanned over 45 years in the biotechnology industry, marked by significant contributions to the development of groundbreaking cancer therapies. His tenure at Genentech Inc., beginning in 1984, saw him rise through the ranks from assay development to director of MAC in biological chemistry by 1992. Dr. Chen then transitioned to quality assurance roles, culminating as a senior quality assurance specialist until 2025. His expertise was instrumental in maintaining end-to-end oversight of product quality for clinical products across multiple development phases.

Before his extensive career at Genentech Inc., Dr. Chen served as the senior director of research and development at Daryl Laboratories Inc. from 1981 to 1984, following his role as a scientist and team leader at International Diagnostic Technology between 1978 and 1981. These roles laid the foundation for his later achievements in biopharmaceuticals.

The decision to pivot and join Genentech Inc. was due to Dr. Chen’s motivation to help the biotechnology research company focus on finding cures for unmet medical needs. This shift led him to transition into a scientist role. Instead of working solely on methods of detection, Dr. Chen became dedicated to discovering actual cures.

Dr. Chen’s academic journey began with a Bachelor of Science in chemistry and biochemistry and a Master of Science in immunochemistry and allergy from McGill University in Canada. Subsequently, he earned a Doctor of Philosophy in microbiology from the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey. Dr. Chen’s postdoctoral research in hematology at Downstate Medical Center and virology at Vanderbilt University further honed his scientific acumen.

Among his professional affiliations, Dr. Chen has chaired the GMP Roundtable for Clinical Supplies in San Francisco and has served on planning committees for the Western Regional American Association of Pharmaceutical Scientists. In addition to his professional endeavors, he co-edited “CE in Biotechnology: Practical Applications for Protein and Peptide Analyses” and authored over 50 publications. Notably, Dr. Chen’s insights have been shared as a keynote speaker at various conferences.

Throughout his career, Dr. Chen has been lauded for his pioneering work on Rituxan and Herceptin, both pivotal cancer treatments. His role in developing capillary electrophoresis techniques and validating analytical assays at Genentech Inc. also underscores his technical prowess. As the only scientist capable of such validations at Genentech, Dr. Chen has left an indelible mark on the field.

Dr. Chen’s contributions have been recognized with accolades such as the CE Pharm Annual Award for significant contributions to capillary electrophoresis applications. He attributes much of his success to the unwavering support he has received throughout his career and his dedication and passion for science.

Reflecting on his life’s work, Dr. Chen advises aspiring scientists that while the field offers substantial rewards, both financially and impactfully, it requires dedication akin to that which he has demonstrated throughout his career. Looking ahead, he plans to continue enjoying his retirement, knowing that his fulfilling career was instrumental in advancing medical science.
