Dr. Sergei Ivanovich Ipatov, Mathematician and Astronomer at the Russian Academy of Sciences, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Scientists for dedication, achievements, and leadership in Science.
A dual citizen of the U.S. and Russia, Dr. Ipatov has been the lead scientist with the V. I. Vernadsky Institute of Geochemistry and Analytical Chemistry of the Russian Academy of Sciences since 2013, and has traveled the world conducting research on a variety of scientific interests. He is an editorial board member of Solar System Research, and has taught at M.V. Lomonosov Moscow State University. From the study of solar system formation to the search for asteroids and exoplanets, Dr. Ipatov has proven himself invaluable to astronomy and astrophysics. In 2019 S.I. Ipatov was awarded the F.A. Bredikhin prize in astronomy of the Russian Academy of Sciences. He has an asteroid named after himself, Asteroid 14360, and is a recipient of an Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award featured in Who’s Who in America, Who’s Who in Science and Engineering, and Who’s Who in the World.
The son of Ivan Iosiphovich Ipatov and Alexandra Ivanovna Ipatova (Ropakova), Sergei Ipatov studied with M.V. Lomonosov Moscow State University and completed a PhD from the M. V. Keldysh Institute of Applied Mathematics of the Russian Academy of Sciences in Moscow. He later earned a DSc from the institute in 1997, after many years as a scientist with the Keldysh Institute. In 1997, he became a lead scientist of the institute. In 2001-2013, Dr. Ipatov has conducted research with the George Mason University and NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center, as well as the Catholic University of America, the University of Maryland, the Carnegie Institution for Science in the USA, and with the Al Subai Scientific Studies Est. in Doha, Qatar.
Dr. Ipatov is the author of “Migration of Celestial Bodies in the Solar System” and a prolific contributor to scientific literature. He has received numerous grants from NASA, the National Science Foundation, the International Association for the Promotion of Cooperation with Scientists from the New Independent States of the Former Soviet Union, the Russian Foundation for Basic Research, the Russian Federal Program of Astronomy, the Belgian Office for Scientific, Technical, and Cultural Affairs, the European Southern Observatory, and the Deutsche Akademische Austauschdienst. He is a member of many illustrious scientific societies, notably the European Astronomical Society, the International Astronomy Union, the Russian Academy of Natural Sciences, and the American Astronomical Society. In his free time, Dr. Ipatov enjoys swimming, walking, photographing, and gardening. He has been married to Valentina Ivanovna Ipatova (Artioukhova) since June 14, 1986.
